Mystic Mangrove - The Sunderbans

Sunderban, one of world's largest estuarine delta is formed by the confluence of the rivers Ganga, Brahmaputra and Meghna. Sundarban - literally interpreted as "beautiful jungle" - is located at extreme south of Kolkata, forms one of the unique ecosystems in Indian sub-continent.

The Sunderban Forest covers 10,000 sq km. of mangrove forest. Around 60 % of this area is part of Bangladesh territory and the remaining 40 % is in India, approximately 4262 sq. kms in the state of West Bengal.


Travel and tourism
The Sunderbans has a wide variety of plant life too. The large floral population in the Sunderbans includes trees like Sundari, Dhundal, Genwa, Garjan, Passur, Goran and Kankara. Interestingly, more than half of the 50 broad mangrove categories are found in the in this eco-region.
